Trends and patterns in TV series episodes’ rating

TV series are a planetary mass phenomenon. The P2P traffic figures speak for themselves. TV series episodes are available immediately after (and even sometimes before) broadcast on P2P networks. The folks at torrentfreak, a P2P focused news site publish regularly a list of the most exchanged TV series on P2P networks.

This offers a good terrain to use simple descriptive statistical techniques on the various datasets available. In this study, we used the data available at IMDB (the user ratings) to take a first peak at the world of TV series.

Each year’s preferred series

In an attempt to grasp the most popular series each year, we calculated the mean rating of all episodes aired each year.

2004 2005 2006 2007 2008
#1 Lost Its Always S… Its Always S… Supernatural Supernatural
#2 South Park Six Feet Under Entourage The Universe Its Always S…
#3 24 Entourage Dexter Its Always S… House M.D.
#4 Nip/Tuck Lost Prison Break Dexter Lost
#5 House M.D. Prison Break Supernatural Brothers and Sisters Entourage
#6 Entourage House M.D. House M.D. Entourage Ugly Betty
#7 Smallville South Park 24 House M.D. Prison Break
#8 Six Feet Under 24 Nip/Tuck South Park Nip/Tuck
#9 Alias Nip/Tuck Lost Lost The Office
#10 Navy NCIS Supernatural Heroes Prison Break The Shield

This must be compared with the various ratings that can be found on many web sites including tv.com which seems to harvest the votes of a fairly large community.

The season’s last episodes pattern

A very common pattern across most that we studied: each season last episodes have very good rating.  Let’s get that a special effort is being “invested” by the producers to stimulate viewers’ curiosity enough to hold their breath until the next season.

The following plots show this pattern (with each season’s last episodes highlighted) on a handful of first class TV series.

Battlestar galactica

Desperate housewives

Lost

Six Feet Under

Nip/Tuck

Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s: 24 is arguably one of the most famous US series. First aired on November 6, 2001, the serie has been a success till today: season 7 started this year with a very clever leak on major P2P web sites. Time will tell if this 7th season is going to attract the attention as much as the first one did and fight the slight erosion that the graph shows.

Heroes

Despite being still one of the most popular TV shows, Heroes seems to be going downhill with a bad 2008 season (and a catastrophic last episode). Let the graphs speak for themselves:

Lost

Sometimes criticized for constantly adding more and more unresolved puzzles to the plot, Lost is still very popular and manages to get a good rating for almost every episode. The great variability of the ratings might be a sign of the confusing plot but the general trend is good.
